Doctoral programmes

ParisTech laboratories play host more than 2400 doctoral students.

ParisTech aims to promote synergy within its doctoral programmes to ensure its students graduate with a qualification recognised by both public and private sector employers.

As a result, ParisTech’s doctoral courses provide a guarantee to
- employers: scientific excellence, selection-based subjects and candidates, business awareness and industrial partnership
- doctoral students: financial support over three years and expert supervision to provide scientific quality and professional vision.
515 theses are presented every year based on work performed in ParisTech laboratories, most of which work in partnership with other establishments and universities. Qualifications are awarded by ParisTech institutes or by universities within a partnership framework.

All laboratories apply the following three principles: high teaching standards, academic excellence and close links with industrial and service industry applications.

ParisTech theses cover the following major areas:

Mathematics and Applications
Information and Communication Sciences and Technologies
Physics, Optics
Materials Science, Mechanics and Mechanical Engineering
Fluid Mechanics and Energy
Chemistry, Physical Chemistry and Chemical Engineering
Life Sciences and Engineering
Earth Sciences and Environmental Engineering
Sciences of Economy, Management and Society

Admission to doctoral studies

Thesis enrolment and selection procedures for candidates are handled by the ParisTech institute to which the host laboratory is attached. Initial applications are made through the doctoral institutes. Candidates are invited to contact a laboratory in order to identify a research subject and to discuss it with a potential thesis supervisor. Selection is based on the candidate’s scientific background (a Masters degree is mandatory) and according to the subject of the thesis approved by a thesis supervisor.

Thesis enrolment applications must include a description of the funding organized by the student (grants, allowance, study contracts, CIFRE scheme for students supported by business sponsors, etc.).
