Admission requirements
Strong points of ParisTech’s educational profile
- a strong emphasis on fundamental knowledge in the core disciplines,
- high standards in Mathematics and Computer Science - the basic tools of today's engineers. These disciplines belong to the compulsory core of courses and can also be developed into an area of in-depth study,
- broad-based studies with a multidisciplinary approach supported by the acquisition of working methods and tools, which enable the future engineer to master technological changes,
- a thorough introduction to Economics, Management and Communication: an engineer must be able to manage, motivate and communicate.
A highly selective admission process
- students are admitted based on a nationwide examination or by virtue of excellent academic records
- because of the competitive admission system, the most prestigious institutions attract the best students, who often reach the highest positions in their later careers.
Pedagogical methods
- mobility and diverse background of the teaching staff: beside permanent faculty members, guest and visiting lecturers, mainly with industrial backgrounds, guarantee effective learning processes and provide an awareness of the professional world of engineering,
- integrated and flexible pedagogical methods, based on lectures but also on group work, case studies, individual or team projects, etc. Thanks to the limited number of students, considerable individual tutoring can be offered.
- Small scale: a 'Grande École' is usually of comparable size to a university department with, at most, 500 graduates per year
Industrial and business connections
Traditional close ties with industry and freely negotiated contracts with private and public companies provide the basis for effective cooperation:
- during the training programs (visiting lecturers),
- in the definition of the goals and desirable skills for future engineers (participation in advisory committees for drawing up the curricula),
- in welcoming students on internships,
- in research contracts and technology transfer.
European and international focus translates into:
- an adequate knowledge of languages for an international activity. All ParisTech engineers must be proficient in English. A second and often a third foreign language is compulsory or strongly recommended. Conversely, foreign students at the ParisTech institutes attend courses in the French language.
- studies and internships abroad, extensive one-year studies at a foreign university integrated into the curriculum of the home institution,
- setting up European and international networks, allowing the exchange of students and faculty members,
- the development of co-operation in scientific and technological research between the ParisTech institutes and their foreign partners.
